Screen calibration

Colour control and management across devices is almost a science.

Obviously, the graphic industry and graphic designers need to ensure that colour consistently renders exactly the same through all stages of production and until the final output, be it a print publication or presentation on a screen.

On X-Ray Mag we also colour correct to ensure that the magazine appears even.

RTC publishes first standard

This first standard is called "RTC Rebreather Diver Level 1," and it delineates a stage in a diver’s development where he or she is trained to dive with a rebreather to a maximum depth of 30m (100ft) with no planned stage decompression stops, and without supervision by an instructor or divemaster.

This standard will make it easier to compare certifications from different agencies, and is intended to be followed by others later.1

Mining magazines for material to post on our website and social media

Constantly coming up with something relevant or newsworhty to post can be right challenge and an ongoing task which require the attention of several associates.

In this video, it is shown how browsing through back issues shows there is quite a trove of various news and mentions which can either be posted as is, or refurbished a bit.

Obviously, some news is perishable goods and soon obsolete but for example, the vast majority of scientific findings we also report on regularly will be valid or current enough for a very long time, say many years.

Photo & Video News

Defining the scope

For starters it is, for a change, easier to define what we are not looking for

While every travel and underwater photo- or videographer does indeed need both cameras and lenses and .... erh...stuff, we do want to steer clear of the following.

On copying from other sources; Curation, mash-ups and fair use

Frequently we find ourselves where we we need or want to use outside material more or less 'as is'.

Perhaps we don't have enough time to research and rewrite all from scratch, perhaps it is just meaningless to do and better to refer to outside sources.

Reviewing Equipment

Design criteria

Not all equipment are created equal but for different purposes and users. Consider the two iconic German cars below.

Which one is the best, which one is the better design?

The Mercedes with its advanced technology, high performance and superior handling? Or the rugged and uncomplicated VW Beetle of which more that 21 million were sold and is the longest-running and most-manufactured car ever made?

Dealing with clients

OK, so you've made some arrangements with a dive operator to go visit their resort or live-aboard, or you've gotten a press trip invitation, to do some travel report for our magazine. Or you may have spoken to some manufacturer about reviewing one of their gizmos or contraptions.

Here are a few psychological mechanisms to be acutely aware of:

It not only matters what you actually say or write, the recipient may [choose to] interpret your words in a different manner, setting the scene for later disappointments or even disagreements.
