Mining magazines for material to post on our website and social media

Every day both our website and social media channels need to be fed with a mix of current news, interesting findings and nice-to-know tidbits.

Turns out, past published magazines are a quite good resource since there are lots of leftovers we did not have time to post first time around.

Constantly coming up with something relevant or newsworhty to post can be right challenge and an ongoing task which require the attention of several associates.

In this video, it is shown how browsing through back issues shows there is quite a trove of various news and mentions which can either be posted as is, or refurbished a bit.

Obviously, some news is perishable goods and soon obsolete but for example, the vast majority of scientific findings we also report on regularly will be valid or current enough for a very long time, say many years.

Finding the referenced article

In the video, the sample article is at one point opened in our InDesign, our layout software. As most won't have access to this software an alternative way of accessing the magazine layout is opening the article in pdf.

As the text cannot be copied out from the publicly posted magazines ( they have been locked as a measure to prevent copy-pasting of our texts and images) the unlocked versions can be downloaded from our file server. Either the complete magazine or the single articles.

Put this URL into your web-browser: ftp://Materials:downloads@xray-mag.dnsalias.com/X-Ray%20Mag%20production/

This will show you the contents of our archive. Browse to the relevant issue and enter the folder called 'pdf' to browse the articles in (unlocked) pdf format.

For example, the specifc article mentioned in this tutorial can be found on this location:

ftp://Materials:downloads@xray-mag.dnsalias.com/X-Ray%20Mag%20production...

Accessing and using HootSuite

In the video it is also shown how we use Hootsuite to curate, edit and amend the Tweets which are automatically posted from our website to an intermediary (and non-public) account.
