Ghost nudibranch, photo by Kate Jonker
Photo by Kate Jonker: Using black and white to create a minimalist image of a ghost nudibranch (Lecithophorus capensis) at Gordon’s Bay, South Africa. Gear: Nikon D850 camera, Nikkor 105mm macro lens, Isotta housing, single Inon Z240 strobe. Exposure: ISO 64, f/22, 1/200s

We asked our contributors what their favorite minimalist underwater photos were and they returned with a creative mix of macro, wide-angle and close-up abstract images in color and black and white.

Retouching Underwater Images

Image 2. Problem zones can be identified (red circles) by zooming into an area of the tutorial image.

It should not happen but sometimes it does anyway: those annoying little white dots in our underwater images, which detract from the overall impression of the photograph. Known as backscatter, these dots appear when small particles in the water reflect the light from a strobe. The more directly the strobe light hits a subject, the higher the risk of backscatter. That is why a strobe should not be pointed straight at a subject.

In underwater photography, "scale" can mean a couple of things: how big or small a thing is or the myriad of tiny plates on the skin of a fish. We asked our contributors what their favorite underwater photos were that showed scale. And playing on the pun, they came back with a creative mix of macro, wide-angle and close-up abstract images.

11th Annual Ocean Art Underwater Photo Contest Winners Announced

It is clear from this year’s winning images that our community of underwater photographers has dived into a new and exciting post-pandemic era.

An unprecedented caliber of photos was ushered in by the lifting of travel restrictions – including our best in show image featuring another teachable moment from an octopus.

This photo, captured in Palm Beach, Florida by Kat Zhou, depicts the bittersweet final days between a mother octopus and her young before dying of old age.
