In the waters off Syracuse, Sicily Italian divers found the wreck of a British Wellington bomber from WW2 resting at 36m.

A Vickers Wellington Mk.IA flying over England in June, 1943

The Vickers Wellington was a British twin-engined, long-range medium bomber. The Wellington was widely used as a night bomber in the early years of the Second World War, performing as one of the principal bombers used by Bomber Command. During 1943, it started to be superseded as a bomber by the larger four-engined planer whcih could carry much bigger loads.

The wreck was located by a team of wreck hunters led by diver Fabio Portella who identified, photographed and reported the find to the authorities. It is the sixth wreck identified by Portella's team in the last 12 months. Finding aircraft and ship wrecks from that era help to piecing together some stages of allied landing and Italian resistance.

A project is already underway to prepare the site for visiting divers
