During the DEMA Show in New Orleans, I encountered a dive industry colleague who appeared quite distressed. He had just discovered that a Formula One race was scheduled concurrently with the next DEMA Show in Las Vegas. His concern was that securing a hotel would be impossible, as he believed everything was already booked. At that moment, I was somewhat sceptical of his concern.
The NAUI Innovation Award is a testament to DAN's unwavering commitment to advancing safety, education, and exploration of the underwater world. This recognition reflects DAN's pioneering efforts in promoting safe diving practices, supporting dive education, and continually enhancing the diving community's experience.
Bret Gilliam was a larger-than-life personality—dare we say, character—in the dive industry. Over a 50-year career, he was involved with several dive-industry firsts, holding a number of influential postings, including serving on the boards of NAUI and IANTD, as well as CEO of TDI. But he was most known for being a co-founder of what would become the largest technical diver training agency in the world, TDI.
It was an upbeat and vibrant edition, reminiscent of how it used to be in its heyday in the late 1990s, when it peaked and only got bigger from year to year. Even the social events and various parties were plentiful and back at full strength—at least, that was my impression.
That is not to say that the show and the dive industry have not changed since DEMA was last held in the Big Easy (New Orleans’ nickname). More than two decades have passed since then, so of course, they have.

Michael Menduno details the highlights of the various presentations given during the sixth biannual international Rebreather Meeting, which took place 1-5 May 2019 on Ponza Island in Italy.
The current version of DAN’s first aid and CPR courses, Version 3.0, was determined to meet or exceed the first aid and CPR training requirements for a merchant mariner credential.
Developed by dive medicine physicians and diving educators, DAN’s courses provide divers with the skills and confidence needed to respond in emergencies. All courses meet current ILCOR and AHA guidelines and are applicable to everyday life as well as diving.
With this year’s theme, “Embracing the Ocean’s Majesty,” the organizers are keen to welcome even more divers, businesses and water sports-related professionals from around the globe.
Jesper har i mere end 40 år gjort et kæmpe arbejde inden for Dansk Sportsdykker Forbund – og i særdeleshed inden for dansk undervandsrugby.
Jesper var en af de drivende kræfter i dansk undervandsrugby allerede fra de første år med uv-rugby i Danmark i starten af 1970’erne, og han var med i både udvikling af den internationale Tommerup Cup samt elite-arbejdet på landsholdet.
