The Sydney sank on November 19, 1941, with the loss of 645 men, after a fierce battle with the German raider Kormoran.

After a 66-year search, the wrecks of both ships were found earlier this month using sonar equipment - the Sydney at a depth of 2,470 metres.

The SV Geosounder, the ship used in the search effort, has returned to the wreck site with a remote operated vehicle in the hope of taking the first footage of the Sydney.

However Finding Sydney Foundation project manager Patrick Flynn said the crew was waiting for the weather to improve before it could complete test dives with the remote vehicle.
