Monterey Marine biologists briefly capture very rare deep-sea shark

A prickly shark has been captured for only the second time ever, in a submarine canyon off the coast of California.

Very little is known about the species, which has rough scales on its upper body and two dorsal fins towards its tail. The prickly shark rarely gets seen because it lives deep in the ocean.
The shark has been returned ocean waters, but for a few short hours visitors to the aquarium got a glimpse of a unique creature. The aquarium tagged and released it again because it wasn't doing well in captivity.

We think it has to do with buoyancy problems. It's designed to be at depth," explained Dr. Murray a veterinarian with the Monterey Bay Aquarium. "We brought it to shallow surfaces and it just didn't float real well and wasn't able to make that adjustment in such a short time period.

But marine biologists say it was still an invaluable experience.

"The prickly shark is a deep water shark not even a whole lot is known about its biology so we're learning just observing this animal all the time," said curator Steve Vogel

This is only the second time a Prickly shark has been seen in captivity. The first time was also at the Monterey Aquarium, almost 20 years ago, and it was released after seven days.
