Nation’s rich maritime heritage to be showcased

The Seychelles is set to open its first ever first-ever museum to showcase the nation’s maritime heritage which dates back to before the 17th century. The announcement was made by Minister for Tourism and Culture Alain St. Ange after the initiative’s recent approval by cabinet of ministers.

Speaking at the press conference, Mr. Alain St. Ange said that the Seychelles maritime history is a rich one and vital it be preserved for the future generations. “This is for Seychelles and for the Seychellois people, “he said. Mr. St. Ange is appealing to anyone possessing artefacts that can be preserved in the museum to donate to the committee.

The museum will be located on Ile Hodoul, an islet situated in the tidal basin of Victoria harbour. The islet is named after Jean-François Hodoul, a French Corsair who arrived in the Seychelles in 1791 on his ship Les Deux Soeurs. The French government is supporting the project and other countries are hoped to get on board to provide assistance. Prior to the opening of the Seychelles International Airport in 1972, travelers to the islands had to journey by boat.
