Russian authorities have found a sunken German ship in the Baltic Sea with more than 10,000 World War II-era munitions aboard, an emergency official was quoted as saying on Thursday.

The wreck is just 1.5km (0.9 miles) from the shore, near the town of Baltiysk, and about 20m (66ft) down. More than 10,000 shells containing explosives are on board, but without detonators, a Russian government official told the BBC.

The sunken barge was found off the coast of Russia's western Kaliningrad exclave, Maxim Vladimirov, deputy head of the firefighting department of the emergency situations ministry, told the RIA-Novosti news agency.

"Following the examination of the sunken German barge... the presence of explosives was confirmed. According to preliminary estimates, more than 10,000 war-era munitions are there," Mr. Vladimirov said.

The barge was found close to the town of Baltiisk 1.5 kilometres (0.9 miles) from shore, he said, adding that demining the sunken ship could take two years. The operation, involving 18 divers, is scheduled to begin later this month.

The announcement comes one day after a World War II-era bomb exploded in Goettingen, Germany, killing three members of a bomb disposal unit.
