President Obama Signs Shark Conservation Act

President Obama has signed into force the Shark Conservation Act, which prohibits almost all shark finning by U.S. vessels and in U.S. waters.

The act requires any U.S. vessel to land sharks with their fins attached and prevents non-fishing vessels from transporting fins without their carcasses.

The new law also allows the United States to block seafood imports from countries that permit shark finning.

Shark finning-the practice of removing fins from sharks at sea-has expanded worldwide due to rising demand for shark's fin soup in Asia. Because shark bodies are largely inedible and without commercial value, live sharks may be discarded at sea to die slowly after their fins have been removed. The new law is intended to stop this practice by requiring vessels to retain sharks intact, thereby making fishing for sharks or bringing aboard sharks that have been caught accidentally labor-intensive and thus not profitable.

The President signed the act on January 4, two weeks after the House and Senate passed the bill.
