Megalodon Nursery Found

The breeding ground of the world's largest, prehistoric predator has been discovered in Panama.
Megalodon is thought to have been the world's largest fish and shark.
C. megalodon is widely regarded as the largest shark to have ever lived. Based on tooth crown height, this giant reached a total length of more than 16 m. One single tooth can exceed more than 168 mm of total height.

Sharks, especially large species, are highly mobile organisms with a complex life history and wide distribution. During their lifetime they generally utilize three types of areas: adult feeding, reproduction and nurseries In modern species, nursery areas are historically defined by the presence of gravid females and free-swimming nenoates (newly borns).

In the shores of the Caribbean Sea in Panama, researcher from Florida Museum of Natural History have found a stash of much smaller teeth, most between about a half-inch and three inches long.

Led by Catalina Pimiento the team compared the fossils to other C. megalodon teeth and determined the teeth belonged almost exclusively to juvenile sharks.

Megalodon lived in areas flooded by much higher ocean waters, which provided warm, shallow shelters for the ferocious beasts to spawn.
