Cuba Ratifies Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage

Cuba ratifies the UNESCO Convention that protects all traces of human existence having a cultural, historical or archaeological character, which have been partially or totally under water, periodically or continuously, for at least 100 years.

The Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage was adopted by the UNESCO General Conference eight years ago and it came into effect early in January, 2009, reported Granma newspaper.

It establishes the obligation to protect the submerged heritage, to preserve it preferably in situ, while rejecting the commercial exploitation of underwater traces of human existence.

It also pledges cooperation between States with a view to safeguard this valuable heritage, the public promotion of its importance and the creation of programs for the training of experts in underwater archeology.

Along with Cuba, only 20 countries have confirmed their support for the 2001 Convention, among them are Bulgaria, Cambodia, Croatia, Ecuador, Slovenia, Spain, Libya, Lebanon, Lithuania, Mexico, Montenegro, Nigeria, Portugal, Saint Lucia, Panama, Paraguay, Rumania and the Ukraine.

Actions to meet the Convention have already been undertaken in Cuba some of them by the Havana Historian’s Office which took into account the organization for the new design of the Castillo de la Real Fuerza Museum established in 2008.

Another program implemented is the handling of traces of the fleet of Admiral Cervera, sunk in 1898, in front of the mouth of Santiago de Cuba Bay.
