Aqua Lung Rogue BCD

Aqua Lung Rogue BCD

Posted in:

Aqua Lung launched their first modular buoyancy control device - the minimalistic 'Outlaw' - at DEMA.2016.

The idea was that this BCD had no pockets, no steel D-rings and a simple backpack. It was aimed at the advanced diver.

12 months later Aqualung unveiled MKII of their Outlaw at DEMA.2017 and renamed it the 'Rogue'.

[We do wonder if the name might be a nod to the recent Star Wars renaissance. Aqua Lung UK's Sales Manager is known to be a huge fan of the Lucas' films...]

The beefed-up Rogue benefits from a wider back increased lift capacity (15 lt / 35 lbs) and space for extra weights.

Aqua Lung states that this build-your-own BCD is easy to assemble. Firstly you select the correctly sized padded torso from one of three sizes. You then connect/snap on the weight pockets and interchangeable shoulder and waist components using the (patent-pending) ModLock connectors. Accessories are then clipped to the BCD using webbed daisy chain. (This gives the diver the choice of multiple attachment points). To detach a component the diver simply uses a small pen-sized object to pop off the insert.

The versatile modular design means that it is possible to create 27 different sizes. This will certainly be popular with dive schools because the shoulder and waist straps can be adjusted on-the-fly, therefore a centre will not need to carry so many BCDs to accommodate their students.

The Rogue has the potential to be a great travel BCD for two good reasons. Firstly it weights in at less than 2.2 kg / 5 lbs. Secondly, the modular design allows the diver to strip down the BCD and pack the backpack, shoulders straps, weight pockets and air cell in the best manner possible, rather than having to resort to ingenious methods to make everything fit in a gear bag.

The Aqua Lung Rogue deliberately comes fully disassembled so that the diver can familiarise themselves with the connections whilst assembling their BCD.
